We don’t often eat cereal in our house but we do sometimes have it around. Cereals such as Cornflakes, Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, Rice Krispies are often cereals that we come back to.
So if we do have it around, can dry cereal be fed to guinea pigs as well?
Can guinea pigs eat dry cereal?
We know that piggies can’t drink milk, so any cereal we do feed to them will have to be dry.
It really depends on the cereal you have in mind.
Avoid any cereal which is sugar-coated, honey and has nuts on. Neither sugar or nuts is good for piggies at all and so should be avoided. That does rule out a lot of cereals there are a lot on the market.
Also avoid hot cereals as well as guinea pigs should not eat any hot foods at all.
They are also not good with wheat, and so any wheat based cereals should be given to guinea pigs in small amounts at the most.
The can eat dried cereals such as Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Cheerio’s, Porridge Oats, Oatmeal, Malt-O Meal, and Grits are fine in small amounts on a once a month basis.
They really shouldn’t be fed any more than that.
Guinea pigs will nibble on anything given the chance and they will certainly go for these foods if presented with them, but they are not especially good for them.
